I purchased the Out-Led Hellena 4.0 helmet mounted lighting system exclusively for cave exploration and survey. There are several high quality lighting systems available in the market today designed for caving including the Swiss-made Scurion, the El-Speleo, made in Croatia, the Greek made Pantheon, and the very popular US made STEN light. Prices range from $1000 for the Scurion to $350 for the STEN. The mid-priced German made Out-Led Hellena is not yet available in the US market, so I wanted to be the first to give it a try. Here are a few characteristics I noticed before actually using it: The lamp head assembly is very lightweight and compact. The housing is only large enough to fit the three Cree emitters and there is no wasted space. There is no switch on the lamp assembly, only a connector for the battery cable. The helmet mount bracket is a simple and robust construction that holds the lamp securely in place, yet allows easy removal of the lamp module. I purchased two batteries, the 4600 ma lion and the 2300 mah lion. The batteries are encased in a very solid, well-made metal housing with clips for belt attachment. The battery assembly is also quite small and compact. The 3ft long cable with integrated switch allows belt mounted battery carry, which is standard for my purposes. I use the Hellena 4.0 for my primary caving lamp, and it serves this purpose very well. The ruggedness of the design is well suited for the demanding, harsh cave environment. There are three brightness settings: low , medium and high. The low beam setting is adequate for standby, the long lasting medium setting is very adequate for any caving scenario, ropework, climbing, etc. I typically use the large 4600 mah battery and keep the 2300 as a spare. I have found the capacity of the 4600 mah battery more than adequate for continuous operation in the medium setting for up to 10 hours. The super-bright high setting generates an impressive 1600 lumens, enough to illuminate very large rooms. I have also noticed that heat dissipation on turbo mode remains quite low, even after an hour of continuous operation in the high setting. The high quality workmanship, the robust, sturdy design of this product and moderate cost make the Out-Led Hellena 4.0 lighting system a strong contender in the international caving light system marketplace.
